Susan Jones of Bath and Kerry Orr of DeWitt team with DeWitt Mayor Paul Opsommer to carry a waterlogged limb section out of the mouth of Prairie Creek, at the Looking Glass River. 20 workers, including city of DeWitt DPS crews, a pair from Clinton County Drain Commissioner’s Office, two Clinton County Jail trustees, and 10 FLG member volunteers cleared sixteen logjam and debris pile sites within the DeWitt city limits. The annual event took place Tuesday the 26th.
(L to R) Susan Jones of Bath floats one of dozens of log sections from the Looking Glass River near McGuire Park. Kerry Orr of DeWitt carried them far into the wetland to prevent re-entry to the stream during fall flooding.
Large maple log sections rest on the bank where placed with the aid of DeWitt DPS’ long-armed backhoe. The river is now open for canoe & kayak traffic within the city limits for the first time since January. 16 logjams and debris islands were cleared on Tuesday.
This pair of fallen maples was the beginning of the large logjam in the LGR east of the pedestrian bridge at DeWitt City Hall in April.
This mammoth logjam continued to collect debris until Tuesday, when it was cleared by a dozen workers with chainsaws, ropes, chains and heavy equipment provided by the City of DeWitt DPS.
