Good afternoon, FLG board members:
The latest riverbank stabilization grant (Sustain Our Great Lakes) was applied for from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation back on October 15. We have not received word yet on the application, and the calendar of events is as follows:
- Thursday, Oct 15, 2009: Full proposals due
- Oct 15 – Dec 15, 2009: Proposals reviewed by a panel of State, Provincial and Tribal reviewers
- Dec 15, 2009 – Feb 15, 2010: Proposals reviewed by the Sustain Our Great Lakes advisory team
- Feb 15 – March 30, 2010: Congressional notification of intent to award grants
- March 30 – April 15, 2010: Anticipated announcement of awards
- April – May 2010: Grant agreements developed with successful applicants
I would expect that we will not know our status until the formal announcement in March, unless we are dropped out sooner in the review process. So, no news (until then) will be good news on the funding front.
On other matters, I have requested a set of estimates from JF New for canoe launches at Riverside Park. I asked for a range of conceptual estimates (from a basic floating dock arrangement to a more substantial permanent structure) so that we can examine and contemplate the design and costs.
Additionally, this project has been put into the long-range parks and recreation master plan which is going through its approval process. Once the plan is approved by MDNR, this project will qualify for MDNR recreation facility grants. Those applications typically have a Spring deadline.
While not related specifically to the river, I have been approached by a local couple who wants to put on a mini-triathlon involving swimming/biking/running. They have approached the Lake Geneva board for the swimming portion, but have not gotten an answer yet. I am not sure if there is anyplace suitable in the river, or even if there could be a canoeing component, but it is something to think about.
Have a good meeting. I will be at the sewer authority for a 4 pm meeting today, but don’t know when that meeting will be ending; otherwise I would have liked to join you to provide this report in person.
If you need me to attend a future board meeting, please let me know.
Thanks –
Chris Olson
