Looking Glass Flotilla Discovers Spring On A Bluebird Day

DeWitt -- Friends of the Looking Glass (FLG) and their guests discovered several harbingers of spring during last Saturday (2.27.10) afternoon's float on the Looking Glass River. On a mostly sunny day, three Eastern Bluebirds "led" the 9-person flotilla for several hundred yards, flitting from tree to tree along the rivertrail, filling the 38-degree air with their distinctive songs. The group's wildlife memory scrapbook also includes a Cooper's Hawk which sailed silently through the trees, a chatty kingfisher, a herd of 10 deer on a highbank, a 10-inch smallmouth bass which broke the surface of the water between two kayaks, and several different genuses of snow fly hatches sunning on the snowy river banks. The group launched at the Old 27 bridge east of DeWitt for a leisurely two hour float and took-out at DeWitt Twp's Looking Glass Park near Airport Road. Participants included: Brian Tingay, DeWitt; Lynn Eiseler, Bath; Mike Gray, DeWitt; Jon Morrison, St. Johns; Jeff Rostoni, Haslett; Jan Nurenberg, Westphalia; Mitch Smith, Mason; Gloria Miller and Bob Bishop, DeWitt. One more FLG winter float is planned for the weekend of March 27/28. The public is always welcome and FLG events are free. Check www.lookingglassriverfriends.org for photos and more information.
