Area Folks Go Kayaking on Superbowl Saturday

DeWitt: Super Bowl Saturday meant physical exercise of a different nature to five people from the region -- they kayaked the Looking Glass River. The group put in at the Wood Road bridge two miles East of DeWitt at 10am and took out @ DeWitt Twp's Looking Glass Park on Herbison Road at 1pm. Mallard ducks, Canada geese, red-tail hawks, a king fisher, a pair of pileated woodpeckers, a dozen or so red-bellied woodpeckers and a lone whistling swan were among the many bird species that greeted the kayakers along the water trail. Members dressed in neoprene waders, ski bibs and layered clothing and all had a blast in the sunny 21 degree weather. The quintet 'sledded' their kayaks over a frozen stretch of the river in the first mile until they came to open water again, at the confluence of the river and the Remy-Chandler Drain, which carries surface water and run-off from East Lansing northward. Participants included: Mitch Smith from Mason, Julie Sanchez from Holt, and Mike Gray, Betty Stone and Bob Bishop all from DeWitt. The event was organized by Friends of the Looking Glass (FLG), which is planning another outing on Sat. Feb. 26, ice conditions permitting. For more information: www.lookingglassriverfriends.org
